Young @ Heart Course Descriptions
Alive Fitness: This is a low-impact fitness class that is affiliated with the Riverside Health Foundation.
Art: The Young@Heart art classes cover everything from colored pencils to portrait and pastel painting. The classes are broken down by the media used, or if you see mixed media as the name you are welcome to use whatever you like.
Arts and Crafts: These classes cover seasonal crafts, paper mache, card making, and other activities.
Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program: This is a low-impact fitness class specifically designed for students suffering from Arthritis. Our instructors are trained by the Arthritis Foundation.
Computers: These courses cover basic computer skills, how to use Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, and how to use the Internet and email.
Chair Fitness: This class is designed for our students who need to exercise in a seated position. Learn how to appropriately exercise your upper body and mid section.
Dynamic Fitness: This is a low-impact aerobic workout and routines vary based on instructor.
Jewelry Making: Learn how to make your own necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. Topics covered are bead weaving/stringing, bead making, wire work, and found object collage.
Mature Driving: This is an 8-hour DMV approved course that will review the DMV handbook and inform you of any new laws taking effect. At the completion of this course you will receive a DMV certificate that you then take back to your insurance company for a discount.
Music: This class is a musical sing-along class to music from the "good-old-days." Students are welcome to bring and play their own instruments.
Needle Arts: In this course students work on their own projects at their own pace and the instructor is available for guidance and teaching you new methods of needle arts.
Pilates: This is the floor work component of Pilates, and will teach you how to stretch and strengthen your muscles. Students will need to bring a yoga mat with them to class.
Photography: These classes are offered in a beginners and experienced format. Beginners learn how to use their cameras and capture stunning photos, while experienced students go out on location to capture shots and then critique them as a class monthly.
Pottery: This course covers wheel work to completion of painted pieces. Students work at their own pace on their own selected projects.
Senior Sessions: This class is designed to provide an opportunity for Young@Heart students to remain current with world issues. Discussion will cover subjects from stress management and drug interaction to local history and travel.
Stretching and Strengthening: For our less active students, this course is designed to teach you how to stretch properly in order to strengthen your muscles.
Tai Chi: In this class you will learn the various forms and poses of the slow, yet precise movements of Tai Chi. This class will help sharpen your focus and strengthen your balance.
Wills, Trust, and Estate Planning: This course is taught by a probate attorney and is designed to teach you the components you'll need to do your own estate planning.
Walking for Health: Learn how to use walking as your daily fitness routine. In this class you will also learn proper footwear and stretches that will work best for walking as a sport.
Water Exercise: In this class you will perform movements in the water equivalent to a low-impact aerobics, without the impact on your knees. This class is offered in both shallow and deep pools based on student preference.
Yoga: These classes are taught by certified instructors and exact flow of the class depends the instructor, and students may modify anything they need to. Students will need to bring a yoga mat to class.
